What Palm Jumeirah actually is
Palm Jumeirah is an artificial island built out into the Gulf from the Jumeirah coastline, between Dubai Marina and the older beach districts. From above it is a palm tree, and on the ground that shape is the easiest way to understand it.
There are three parts. The trunk runs out from the mainland and carries most of the apartment towers, the shops and the restaurants. The fronds branch off it on either side, each one a quiet road of villas with the sea at the end of the garden. The crescent curves around the outside as a breakwater, and it is lined with resort hotels and beach clubs.
Which part you stay in changes the trip more than anything else. An apartment on the trunk is a city flat with a beach nearby; a villa on a frond is a private house with a beach of its own; the crescent is resort territory. They are all Palm Jumeirah, and they are three different holidays.
Who it suits
It suits a beach holiday more than anywhere else in Dubai. Most of the island is built around the water, many buildings and most frond villas have direct beach access, and sea views are the norm rather than the premium.
It suits families who want space and a pool without the noise of a hotel. A villa on a frond gives a group the kind of room no hotel suite does, and the fronds themselves are quiet, residential and largely free of through-traffic.
It suits a longer stay for the same reasons people live here: the apartments are residential, with full kitchens and laundry, and the island has its own supermarkets, cafés and gyms, so a month here does not mean a month in a resort.
It suits sightseeing less well. Downtown, the old city and the airport are all drives from the island, and the roads on and off the island are busy at the obvious times. If the plan is to see a different part of Dubai every day, a central district will cost less time.
Getting on, off and around the island
The trunk joins the mainland near Dubai Marina and Dubai Media City, and almost everyone arrives by road. A tunnel runs under the water from the top of the trunk out to the crescent.
A monorail runs the length of the trunk, from the mainland end out to the crescent, with stops along the way. It is useful for getting up and down the island, and its mainland station links with the Dubai Tram, which in turn reaches the Dubai Metro. For most trips off the island, though, people take a taxi or a ride-hailing car, which reach every building without difficulty.
On the island itself, the trunk is walkable along its length, and the fronds are short, quiet roads where children can ride a bike. A car is useful for going elsewhere in Dubai and rarely needed for anything on the Palm.
What the homes are like
The apartments on the trunk are in mid- and high-rise residential buildings, most with a pool, a gym, and either a private beach or access to one. Views are the selling point: the sea, the Marina skyline across the water, or the frond villas below.
The villas on the fronds are the island’s signature. Each frond is a single road with villas on both sides, most of them backing directly onto the beach. They are large family homes, often with a private pool and garden, and they suit a group travelling together far better than two or three hotel rooms would.
fäm Living has a small number of homes on Palm Jumeirah, so what is free changes quickly with the dates. Put your dates in to see what is available rather than relying on a description, and for peak weeks it is worth looking early.
When to come
Dubai’s comfortable months run from about November to March, and that is when the Palm is at its best: warm enough for the beach every day, cool enough in the evening to eat outside. It is also when the island is busiest and most expensive.
In summer the heat is serious, and a beach holiday becomes a pool-and-air-conditioning holiday with a swim in the early morning. Rates fall to match, and for a long stay that is a real consideration.
What staying with fäm Living is like
Every home is licensed with Dubai’s Department of Economy and Tourism and registered on the Holiday Homes system, the same as everywhere else we operate.
Check-in is in person, by our team here in Dubai, and the same cleaning standard applies between every stay, however long it is.
Booking direct means the nightly rate and the cleaning fee and nothing on top. The price quoted is for your actual dates, including the reduction on a longer stay.
Questions
Staying in Palm Jumeirah
- Is Palm Jumeirah a good place to stay in Dubai?
- It is the best choice in Dubai if the trip is about the beach and the sea, and a weaker one if you want to see a different part of the city every day. Downtown and the older districts are drives from the island rather than walks.
- What is the difference between the trunk, the fronds and the crescent?
- The trunk is the central spine, with apartment towers, shops and restaurants. The fronds branch off it and are quiet roads of villas, many backing onto the beach. The crescent is the outer breakwater, lined with resort hotels and beach clubs.
- Do holiday homes on Palm Jumeirah have beach access?
- Many do. Most frond villas back directly onto the beach, and many apartment buildings on the trunk have a private beach or access to one. It varies by building, so check the listing for the home you are looking at.
- How do you get around Palm Jumeirah without a car?
- A monorail runs along the trunk to the crescent, and its mainland station connects with the Dubai Tram and from there the Metro. Taxis and ride-hailing reach every building, and the trunk itself is walkable along its length.
- Can I book a Palm Jumeirah home for a month or longer?
- Yes. The apartments and villas are residential homes with full kitchens and laundry, and longer stays are priced differently — add your dates and the price shown is for that stay. We have a small number of homes here, so look early.
- Palm Jumeirah or Dubai Marina — which is better for a holiday?
- They sit next to each other and suit different trips. The Palm is quieter and built around the beach, with villas and sea views; the Marina is livelier, with the waterfront promenade, more restaurants on the doorstep and the Metro close by. For a beach holiday, the Palm; for going out, the Marina.
- Is Palm Jumeirah expensive to stay on?
- It is one of Dubai’s more expensive places to stay, because of the beach access and the views, and the villas on the fronds sit at the top of the market. Rates are highest from November to March and fall in summer, and longer stays are priced lower per night.
