Where Ajman is, and why people stay there
Ajman sits on the Arabian Gulf coast, north of Sharjah and a straightforward drive up from Dubai. It is the smallest emirate in the UAE and the quietest of the northern ones.
The appeal is the coastline and the pace. Ajman's beaches are uncrowded in a way Dubai's are not, the corniche runs along the water, and the whole place moves more slowly. For a weekend out of the city, or a longer stay where the point is not to be in the middle of everything, that is the draw.
It is also considerably less expensive than Dubai for the same kind of apartment, which matters most on a long stay.
Getting there and getting around
Ajman is reached by road from Dubai, up the coast through Sharjah. Most visitors drive or take a taxi; there is no metro connection.
Once there, a car is genuinely useful in a way it is not in central Dubai. The emirate is small enough to cross quickly, and the coast road is the spine of it.
Holiday homes in Ajman are new
Ajman only regulated holiday homes in 2023, through the Ajman Department of Tourism Development. Before that, staying in a private apartment rather than a hotel was not a straightforward option here.
That newness is why there is less choice in Ajman than in Dubai, and why the standard varies. It is also why an operator that runs its homes properly is worth finding.

- It is a drive up the coast through Sharjah — comfortably done in an hour outside peak traffic, longer during it. There is no metro connection, so most people drive or take a taxi.
- Is Ajman worth staying in rather than Dubai?
- If you want the coast, quiet and space, yes — the beaches are far less crowded and everything costs less. If your reason for coming is Dubai's restaurants, shopping and nightlife, stay in Dubai and visit Ajman for a day.
- Are holiday homes legal in Ajman?
- Yes. Ajman regulated them in 2023 through its Department of Tourism Development, and homes must be registered to take guests.
