Where Ajman is, and why people stay there

Ajman sits on the Arabian Gulf coast, north of Sharjah and a straightforward drive up from Dubai. It is the smallest emirate in the UAE and the quietest of the northern ones.

The appeal is the coastline and the pace. Ajman's beaches are uncrowded in a way Dubai's are not, the corniche runs along the water, and the whole place moves more slowly. For a weekend out of the city, or a longer stay where the point is not to be in the middle of everything, that is the draw.

It is also considerably less expensive than Dubai for the same kind of apartment, which matters most on a long stay.

Al Zorah

Most of our Ajman homes are in Al Zorah, a newer coastal community at the southern edge of the emirate, close to the border with Sharjah. It was planned around its natural setting rather than squeezed between towers, and it shows.

The community wraps around a protected area of mangroves and lagoons, home to herons, flamingos in season and a great deal of other birdlife, and it is one of the few places near Dubai where you can kayak or paddleboard through mangrove channels. Alongside it are a long beach, a golf course and a marina.

The homes are apartments and villas in low- and mid-rise buildings, many with views over the water, the mangroves or the golf course. It feels like a resort without being one: residential, quiet, and built for people who want space and the outdoors more than nightlife.

Who it suits

It suits anyone who wants the beach without the crowds. Families especially, for the space, the quiet and the outdoor life in Al Zorah, and couples looking for a slower few days than Dubai allows.

It suits long stays particularly well. Rates are well below Dubai's for the same size of apartment, and a month by the water with room to spread out is a very different proposition from a month in a city tower.

It suits people working in Sharjah or the northern emirates, for whom Ajman is closer than Dubai and far better value.

It suits less well a trip built around Dubai's sights. Downtown, the Marina and the airports are all drives, and if you plan to be in Dubai every day, the time on the road adds up. In that case, stay in Dubai and come to Ajman for a day or a weekend.

Getting there and getting around

Ajman is reached by road from Dubai, up the coast through Sharjah. Most visitors drive or take a taxi; there is no metro connection.

Once there, a car is genuinely useful in a way it is not in central Dubai. The emirate is small enough to cross quickly, and the coast road is the spine of it.

Traffic on the roads between Dubai and Sharjah is heavy at the start and end of the working day. Outside those hours the drive is straightforward; inside them it can take a good deal longer, which is worth planning around on arrival and departure days.

Holiday homes in Ajman are new

Ajman only regulated holiday homes in 2023, through the Ajman Department of Tourism Development. Before that, staying in a private apartment rather than a hotel was not a straightforward option here.

That newness is why there is less choice in Ajman than in Dubai, and why the standard varies. It is also why an operator that runs its homes properly is worth finding.

When to come

The comfortable months run from about November to March, the same as in Dubai, and on Ajman's coast that is when the beach, the mangroves and the outdoor life are at their best.

Summer is very hot, and the day moves indoors and into the pool. Rates fall to match, and for a long stay where you are working or living rather than sightseeing, the summer is considerably better value.
